Two topics are near and dear to my heart, and have informed my work as a game designer, writer, and educator. Those topics are diversity and accessibility. As a young gay girl there was no one like me in the books I read, the games I played, or the film and television I watched. Things are a little better now, but I firmly believe we need more women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA, and older adult playable characters in games.
Accessibility is all about creating games that accommodate a variety of levels of vision, hearing, reflex-responsiveness, and learning rates. Everyone deserves to have the engaging, enjoyable experience of play, and I am dedicated to designing games that make that possible. These passions have come together in a focus on gerontoludic game design—game design that takes the experience, interests, and accessibility needs of older adults into account.
